Catania is an Italian city that has more than 300,000 inhabitants.
The city was founded in 729 BC. from the Calcidesi of nearby Naxos. Catania boasts a thousand-year history characterized by various dominations whose remains enrich its artistic, architectural and cultural heritage. Under the Aragonese dynasty it was the capital of the Kingdom of Sicily, and since 1434 at the behest of King Alfonso V it is the seat of the oldest university on the island. In the course of its history it has been affected several times by volcanic eruptions (the most impressive, in historical times, is that of 1669) and by earthquakes (the most catastrophic mentioned were those of 1169 and 1693).
The baroque of its historic center was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, together with that of seven municipalities in the Val di Noto (Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli), in 2002 .
The Baroque city has an important historical, artistic and cultural value.
Over time Catania has been largely transformed by the consequences of the earthquakes that raged on this part of Sicily. Its surrounding territory has been covered several times by lava flows that have reached the sea.
The populations who have inhabited it, from ancient times to today, have always stubbornly insisted on rebuilding the city, giving life to monuments and squares that still continue to retain much clamor.
What to visit in Catania
Among the most interesting monuments we find a large portion belonging to the Baroque age. Luxurious but also elegant and particular monuments are at the center of the interest of tourists who come to the city.
Among the main monuments we find:
- The Elephant Fountain
Now a symbol of the heart of Catania, the Elephant Fountain continues to be one of the most visited destinations. Symbol of the city located in the center of Piazza del Duomo. The monument depicts an elephant facing with its trunk towards the cathedral of Sant'Agata. The age of this statue is still uncertain but over time it has become the representation not only of the city but also the coat of arms of the province, of the university and also mascot of the main sports clubs.
- Church of San Biagio
The church of San Biagio, also known as the church of Sant'Agata alla Fornace, is a Catholic church in Catania.
An imposing religious and cultural symbol, it is located in the San Biagio della Calcarella district or Roman Amphitheater of Catania, and stands at the western end of Piazza Stesicoro.
The church was built after the disastrous earthquake that occurred in 1693.
The church was built at the request of Archbishop Andrea Riggio in the place where, according to tradition, the furnace in which Sant'Agata suffered martyrdom was located.
Catania is full of monuments and places to visit impossible to list in their entirety otherwise it would take pages and pages. Visiting Catania takes time and observing the entire city and what it has to offer could certainly take more than a few days.
